About Desalination

Desalination is the processes that remove minerals from saline water to make it suitable for human consumption and/or industrial use the most common desalination methods employ reverse-osmosis in which salt water is forced through a membrane that allows water molecules to pass but blocks the molecules of salt and other minerals. Desalination is a process of removing salt from sea or brackish water. The removal of salts from saline water gives fresh water and it is an increasingly popular way of providing fresh water to coastal populations. Reverse Osmosis and Nanofilatration are leading pressure driven membrane processes. Forward osmosis is a new commercial desalting process. Membrane desalination is a hybrid process of reverse osmosis and distillation in which a hydrophobic synthetic membrane is used to allow the flow of water vapor through the membrane pores, but not the solution.
