About Gastroenterology

Gastroenterology deals with the stomach or intestine including the digestive system and its disorders. Right from mouth to anus there are various organs in the stomach such as alimentary canal, esophagus, colon, rectum, pancreas, gallbladder, bile ducts, liver, duodenum, small intestine and large intestine along the digestive track. Gastroenterology deals with the functioning of each organ in the track while focusing on various diseases that may attack the gastrointestinal track. Gastroenterologist is a trained physician with an exclusive focus on the disease management of gastrointestinal track and Liver. The study facilitates a thorough understanding of the digestion process, absorption of nutrient values, and excretion. It also discusses the diseases that may affect these organs including polyps, cancer, ulcers, hepatitis, and refluxes. Gastrointestinal and digestive disorders account for one in ten consultations in primary care and the same proportion of referrals to specialists. The costs of investigations and prescribing for gastrointestinal complaints are considerable. Decisions about commissioning and clinical governance in gastroenterology require primary care input and national policy in gastroenterology also needs to be informed by GPs and their community based colleagues. The PCSG is ideally placed to provide advice and support through consultation with committee members and dialogue with our large and experienced membership.
