Biography
Dr. Matthias Loebe is a Cardiovascular and thoracic surgeon whose interest lies in the therapy of advanced heart disease and lung disease. He is an active clinician performing the whole spectrum of cardiovascular and lung surgery. As director of transplant and assist devices at The Methodist Hospital Dr. Loebe ran the thoracic transplant programs.
Dr. Loebe gained extensive clinical experience in congenital cardiac surgery in Berlin. Dr. Loebe is a board certified general surgeon and has performed a multitude of general surgery procedures. Dr. Loebe has developed several innovative techniques in cardiac surgery over the years.
He is presently the Chief of the Division of Heart and Lung Transplant and Assist Devices in the Miami Transplant Institute (MTI) a unique affiliation between Jackson Health System and UHealth – University of Miami Health System.
Dr. Loebe is a member of the MSQM committee for cardiac surgery at TMH. He is also a member of the leadership committees for heart transplant, VAD, and lung transplant. Dr. Loebe is the surgical director of heart transplant, heart-lung transplant, and of the LVAD program. Dr. Loebe’s research has focused for the last 25 years on thoracic organ replacement and the mechanisms of end stage heart and lung disease. In addition, a wide spectrum of scientific issues relating to cardiovascular surgery has been covered by publications.
Dr. Loebe’s research was instrumental in the implementation of second generation heart pumps and he has extensively published on the impact of non-pulsatile flow on human physiology. Myocardial recovery under mechanical support and inflammatory mediators in heart failure were the subject of papers that significantly influenced the field. Dr. Loebe co-developed the Berlin Heart pediatric assist device and reported on its initial use. Clinical experience in the long-term use of assist devices and patient selection were the subject of further publications.
Dr. Loebe joined The Miami Transplant Institute in March 2015 and prior to that was at The Methodist Hospital in Houston, TX in the year 2000 and had been practicing Cardio-Vascular Surgery; initially as partner of Dr. George Noon and Dr. Michael E. DeBakey and now as Chief of Transplant Surgery. With Dr. Noon he operated and cared for Dr. Michael E. DeBakey when Dr. DeBakey suffered from Aortic dissection (DeBakey type II).
Dr. Loebe is one of the few surgeons in the world who has successfully performed acute aortic surgery in Jehovah's Witnesses patients without blood transfusion.
