Biography

Stuart Greenstein, MD, earned his medical degree at Harvard Medical School in Boston, Massachusetts. He completed his internship year in General Surgery at NYU Medical Center followed by a residency in General Surgery at the University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey (UMDNJ). He went on to complete a fellowship in Vascular Surgery at the University of Pennsylvania, followed by a Fellowship in Transplant Surgery at SUNY- Downstate. He is a UNOS certified transplant surgeon who has been a dedicated member of the Montefiore Medical Center Kidney Transplant Program for more than 25 years performing more than 800 kidney transplants as well thousands of angioaccess procedures in caring for patients with ESRD. Prior to joining Montefiore, Dr. Greenstein served as the Acting Director of the Kidney Transplant Program at Hahnemann University. Dr. Greenstein is board certified by the American Board of General Surgery. He is a member of more than twenty medical societies, has served on the ASTS Ethics Committee and Standards on Organ Procurement Committee, and for the past three years has chaired the Standards and Quality Committee of ASTS and has spearheaded the development of TransQIP which is the Transplant community’s version of NSQIP. He chaired the Organ Availability Committee of the United Network for Organ Sharing as well as Co-chaired the Ad hoc Committee on Public Solicitation. He currently serves on the Editorial Board of Transplantation. Dr. Greenstein has been the principle investigator in more than twenty trials in transplantation and angioaccess and has written numerous articles on kidney transplantation, angioaccess and organ donation.

Research Interest

Dr. Greenstein’s main clinical and research interest is renal transplant outcomes and immunosuppression. He has written extensively on transplant outcomes and recently on the role of extended criteria donors. He also has a special interest in altruistic.
