One of the nation's top academic medical centers, the University of Rochester Medical Center forms the centerpiece of the University's health research, teaching, patient care and community outreach missions. The motto of the University of Rochester, Meliora ("ever better"), symbolizes the continuous change and improvement that have defined the University since its founding in 1850.
The main campus of the University of Rochester Medical Center covers over 4.4 million sq. feet of space. Strong Memorial Hospital covers 1.6 million sq. feet, the School of Medicine 2.1 million sq. feet, and the School of Nursing and the Eastman Dental Center about 100,000 sq. feet each. The faculty of the School of Medicine and Denstistry consists of approximately 1,400 full-time faculty members and 650 voluntary clinical faculty members organized into 32 departments and centers. The student rosters include approximately 400 medical students, 550 graduate students, and 600 residents and fellows.
Over the last five years, the UR School of Medicine and Dentistry has received almost $1.3 billion in total research funding. The School ranks in the top quartile of U.S. academic medical centers in research funding from the National Institutes of Health, attracting nearly three times the federal funding received by the medical schools in Albany, Syracuse and Buffalo combined. The University achieved top-15 rankings in NIH funding in biochemistry, microbiology and immunology, neurology, obstetrics and gynecology, oral biology, and musculoskeletal research. The University of Rochester Medical Center was one of the first 12 to receive a $40 million Clinical and Translational Science Award from the National Institutes of Health. For the last 12 years, the University has been listed among the top 15 institutions in the country in royalty revenue from our licensed technologies. In the past 15 years, more than 24 new companies have been formed with URMC technologies.
