It involves the microscopic examination of tissue samples, obtained through surgical procedures or biopsies, to uncover the underlying pathology of a wide range of medical conditions. In this article, we will explore the world of surgical pathology, its significance, and the impact it has on modern healthcare.
The primary role of surgical pathologists is to diagnose diseases. By carefully examining tissue samples, pathologists can identify the presence of cancer, infectious agents, inflammatory conditions, and other diseases. This diagnosis serves as the foundation for further medical decisions and treatment planning.
In the case of cancer, surgical pathologists determine the stage and grade of the disease, which helps clinicians assess the extent of tumor spread and select appropriate therapies. Accurate staging and grading are vital for predicting a patient's prognosis.
